I love these days between the festivities in December. For many of us, Christmas is just over and the new year is ahead of us. The days in between are perfect for a little reboot session if you want so. After my whirlwind Paris Christmas time including delicious restaurants and great cafés, a great theater evening and an interesting exhibition, some shopping and lots of walking, I am back to a regular Monday however it is not a regular one per se. The days between the festivities are enjoyed by the majority as days off so it is unusually quiet for a Monday. I love it as it creates some space – both physically and mentally.

For me, the days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve are the best moments for a clean-up – reconsidering the things, thoughts, deeds and words. It is a sort of end-of-the-year catharsis to establish a solid and comforting base for the coming year. I am not so much about new year’s resolutions as much as I am about a good and healthy start into the new year. This catharsis can take on different forms: it can mean a declutter project at home, at the desk in the office, but also a decluttering of my mind and body. I like to look back at what was achieved in this year, what I wanted to achieve but did not succeed, what I like to do in my thoughts but never did. I like to look around and question things and actions and correct them or erase them if necessary. All for the sake of a better coming year.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not a sort of economical thought with the ultimate goal of growing and achieving more. Even though I had studied international economics at university, I am increasingly reluctant with its theories regarding my personal life. I am  not a success-driven career person. This is not a question of good or bad, of smart or short-minded, it is a personal choice I make for myself. I don’t want to rely on numbers in my life and on projects to be accomplished. I don’t want to rush myself to bigger, better, faster. Maybe for some of you this might sound a bit too idle and I know some of you will think that I am pursuing quite many projects. Both aspects might be true to some extent but what it shows most is that it is up to you to decide to what level you feel comfortable, productive, creative and when you’re reaching the tipping point of being stressed out. It is the moment when you feel you are driven by your projects. That is when you let your work overrule you and take over control. Something I want to avoid.

The end of a year is always great to look back and evaluate. But it is also great to peek ahead and to ascertain. I already know that my 2016 will be pretty busy and exciting. That’s why it is so important to start clean and ready and to know what I want and what I do not want and do not need. I will try to make wise decisions and not let myself be driven by work but rather control it and drive it myself – to the extent I consider adequate. So after all maybe I am a new year’s resolution kind of guy.

The days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve are great. I will try to make the best of them. But for now I will enjoy the winter sunshine and the blue skies. Because life is better than any to-do list. So are you ready for 2016?
