Kitchen Idea: Open Shelves

I think I’ve nagged more than once about my super tiny kitchen here on the blog. However, with small kitchens you have to be smart when it comes to storage and display. One great idea to use the wall space are open shelves. They not only offer storage space, but also add a visual highlight to any kitchen.

I have five open shelves in my kitchenette and even though they are way less decorative as the one above seen on Helt Enkelt blog, I love to change the displayed goodies – an ever changing selection of simple stoneware, colourful bowls, tea boxes, a few white Ikea storage jars and an old candy box from the Bretagne – that’s it about in my ‘petite cuisine’. What’s your stance on open shelves? Do you have some at home?

Shelves look pretty but they take a lot of dust. I have four shelves in my small kitchen with mugs, glasses, scale, … on it but takes a lot of dust and now i’m washing everything that’s standing on the shelves every week and i’m tired to do it so when we our ging to re do our kitchen next year i will take cabinets with doors. But i ADMIT SHELVES LOOK AMAZING!

    Best regards, Davy

Thank you, Davy! I agree on the dust point – but I just made a trade-off for myself: dusting for displaying:-) A tour of my very small home is planned…soon:-)

I have never had a kitchen that didn’t have open shelves. I’m a freak for cleaning as well but I don’t care about the dust it’s worth the look. Will never have a kitchen without them.

    Herzlich, Mona

I dont have any wall space for shelving in my tiny shoe box kitchen, so I use the tops of the wall cupboards to display some of my favourite items, generally my bodum or alessi stuff, as for the dust it can stay up there where I cant see it

I’m a huge fan of open shelves and wish my kitchen had more of them – for displaying ceramics, jars, glasses and even linens – anything you collect and love to look at!

I do have open shelves in my kitchen. 2 long white ones. I really love the way they look and it was the perfect solution for our temporary space (low effort, low cost), but seriously, I’m with Davy here. I HATE dust and dusting. Over time, it has taken the whole joy out of my sleek open shelves. Therefore, sadly, I wouldn’t do open shelving again in the future. Maybe just one to display my favorite kitchen items, but that’s it. The ones I have now span the length of my kitchen and hold pretty much everything (and the colour scheme of “everything” on those shelves is white, glass, metallic and wood – so to me, they look so nice to look at!) but it’s so much work to take everything down and wipe down the shelves, wash out my glass bowls and vases that I don’t use frequently so they look shiny again, uggh. I get crazy just thinking about it. It’s a good thing they look nice 😉

    Xx.

So let’s do some interior design algebra: New equation: Open shelves + cleaning staff = happy home:-) I can live with that!

I’m a big fan of open shelves in kitchens, whether they are big or small. It’s just such a lovely way to show off all that beautiful kitchenware. It’s such a shame to keep all that in closed cupboards.

There is so much storage space in our kitchen so open shelves are really not necessary. But there is one small shelve where I keep my Tivoli radio, 1-2 small bowls and usually one fresh flower from the garden in a vase.
