Here comes some ‘Igor trivia’: I love the Golden Girls (but who doesn’t, right Gerard?). And I keep rewatching them and every time I watch them again I discover new fun interior design details. Have you noticed that the iconic Golden Girls interior style is pretty trendy right now? I mean think of big banana leaves prints, houseplants galore, pastel colours and wicker and rattan furniture. Truth be told, this was my first thought when I entered the showroom of Spanish furniture maker Expormim located between in the vicinity of Valencia. I couldn’t help but imagine Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia sitting in their wonderful wicker furniture. I know, pretty odd, but hey, that’s me.

Expormim was founded in 1960 and stands for ‘La Exportadora del Mimbre’ – the exporting company of wicker. Wickerware is traditional in and around Valencia and in the early years all the raw material came from central parts of Spain. Ever since the company has grown and has adapted modern techniques to improve the quality of their products – their furniture is even more comfortable, strong and durable than before. Expormim reinvents its classical pieces as well as adding new designs in collaboration with world renown designers such as Jaime Hayon.

While I strolled through their vast showroom (a 19th-century post office building, when the mail came predominately by horses in this region), I was impressed how contemporary every piece looked like, even the old pieces designed more than 50 years ago. And it is matching incredibly the current tendency towards natural materials, rich textures and a modern boho appearance. Just look at the wonderful Nautica swing chair designed by Alberto Sánchez of Mut Design – this chair could be easily seen in the most beautiful homes ranging from cool Scandinavian styles over vibrant boho homes to contemporary design apartments.

At Expormim I could have easily picked an entire furniture set-up for a new home. Their chairs, benches, side tables – everything looked just fabulous and my favorites were the Nautica chair, the Tina, Fontal and Lapala chairs, the Solid sideboards and the Nido series of furniture. Have I mentioned I need a bigger apartment? And now I am signing off to watch – you guessed right – an episode of the Golden Girls. Thank you for being a friend!
