This month we want to kick start a new series for the Urban Jungle Bloggers – ‘Plant Still-life’. With the ‘Plant Still-life’ we want to encourage you to create a styling vignette with a certain theme by using plants and other props. This month we have chosen the topic ‘Desert’. As always we are very open in our interpretation. So here I roll with my ‘Plant Still-life’.
As always I ended up doing everything in a rush. I got back home after work – extra a bit early – but it was so gloomy that I gave up. Then the light got better and I was running around like a headless chicken. In this season the light is really difficult. But it was time to get going. What would best portray the theme ‘desert’ in my home? I have no piles of sand, no tall cacti, no desert pictures. Then I remembered some old ethnographic images from Egyptian people. And the theme was set.
These images from people from the desert anchor my styling. The rest was a quick shuffling of props. I focused on earthy hues as a reference to the colours of the desert. A handmade mini tajine made of ceramic, a wooden bowl, and brass details framed the styling. Last but not least I added a few plants.
The selected plants are no desert plants. Since the desert I referred to is rather the African Sahara than Central American deserts, it was hard to select adequate plants. Instead I added two cacti, a little banana palm, an Aloe vera plant, and a pineapple plant. I imagine these plants to grow in a lush courtyard of a riad somewhere in Northern Africa. And that is if not in the desert, then at least at the desert’s brink. And that is good enough for today’s styling (after I had collected all kind of props in preparation of this post – see the last images here).
So now I am off to see your ‘Plant Still-lifes’. Oh and if you have a certain topic you’d like to see for an upcoming Urban Jungle Bloggers month, let me know in the comments!

You headless chicken you! 😀 I love the faces of the people from Egypt and the (Dutch) text below stating that Arab women (even when they were from Mesopotamia and were considered as underclass people) love jewelry and have lots of self confidence and are intelligent 🙂 Allez, happy UJB day!
hello Igor,
I too had problems with the light yesterday when I was shooting my contribution. There was a short while in the afternoon, just before the light disappeared that gave enough light. But it was short. As you said, it is tricky with the light this time of the year. I waited a whole week to shoot the pictures before I was able to yesterday. It has been extremely gloomy and dark here in Sweden lately. I see that you too fell into the trap of using an aloe vera for the desert theme… I did too. Only later looked it up to find that it is actually a tropical and has nothing to do with deserts… Well, I always somehow associate with deserts when i see an aloe vera plant.
Hahaha yes I know, but then I thought all the time of the African Sahara as an inspiration and frankly there is hardly anything growing apart from date palms in the oases:-) So I picked just random plants – it is more the props that refer to the ‘desert’ theme.
Hah! Das ist ja toll: Du hast eine Ägypterin, ich eine bekannte Dame aus Mexico – schöne Parallele!
Sehr toll in Szene gesetzt!

Ja, die “Wüstendamen” sind einfach wunderbar und machen was her! Und Dein Beitrag ist auch so schön geworden – er hat echtes mexikanisches Flair!
Hi Igor, what a beautiful composition. I got the feeling from it and love the images of women from the desert.
I had myself the same difficulty as I don’t posses real desert stuff. Going by suggestion though was fun!
See you next time 🙂
Hi Igor,
What color paint is on the wall? I love it!
Greetings, Hanneke
